 Jim Barrett swore he would never sell insurance. Jim grew up in Chicago, dreaming and grooming to be a professional golfer. While still in college he had the opportunity to play alongside Howard Twitty, a future pro golfer. At that point he realized, “I’m not even good enough to carry the guy’s bags.” For generations, the profession of choice in his family was law. Although he studied law while at Arizona State, Jim knew he never really wanted to be an attorney either. Then came the fateful day when he replied to an ad “Daytime Sales – No Nights or Weekends.” During the interview, he discovered the ad was for an insurance position. Jim let them know he was not interested and walked out.
But this National company was persistent and persuaded him to take a personality test, which showed him to be ideally suited. In five years he built an agency from scratch that climbed to #1 in sales nationwide. Ten years later, he left the company after serving as the VP of Sales for their western territory. He then began consulting work, writing industry trade journal articles and starting his own independent voluntary benefits agency which is now a part of Benefits Technologies.
Jim believes that his attitude and work ethic are what make him unique. He will tell you that the secret to his success is not really a secret at all: hard work. Over the years he has worked hard for his clients and has worked hard to grow in his knowledge of the industry by participating in training programs at Columbia School of Business, Darden University and pursuing MBA training at Penn State University.
Jim’s passion is securing the best benefits possible for middle-income Americans, as he believes this segment of the population is often overlooked and under-represented in the industry. He believes Benefits Technologies is an exciting place to be right now, as it offers the strength and financial stability that employers and brokers are seeking, and it offers leadership that is willing to invest back in their communities.
